Genghis Khan (Upper-Intermediate – C1)

Genghis Khan – Transcript

Genghis Khan was the founder of the Mongol Empire, which, after his death, became the largest empire in history. He came to power by uniting many of the nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia. After being proclaimed the ruler of the Mongols, Genghis Khan began the Mongol invasions, which ultimately conquered much of Eurasia. During his life, he launched many successful campaigns in distant lands.
Genghis Khan and his empire have a fearsome reputation. Many historians describe Genghis Khan’s conquests as causing considerable death and destruction. Some estimate that his military campaigns caused the deaths of tens of millions of civilians.
Despite this fact, Genghis Khan is often portrayed positively out of respect for the great spread of culture, technology and ideas under the Mongol Empire. He is also praised for bringing strict but fair laws to his vast empire, practicing meritocracy and encouraging religious tolerance.
