Harriet Tubman (Beginner – A2)

Harriet Tubman- Transcript

Harriet Tubman was an African American woman who worked to end slavery. She was also a spy and the first black woman to lead a mission during the American Civil War. She was born a slave but she escaped. During her life, she helped more than 300 other slaves escape.
When Tubman was a child, an angry guard threw a piece of metal at another slave. The piece of metal accidentally hit Tubman’s head. That caused headaches and strange visions. She had those problems all her life. Tubman believed the visions came from God.
In 1849, Tubman escaped to Philadelphia. Slaves were free there. She later returned to her home town to rescue her family and many others. Tubman was never caught because nobody knew she was freeing the slaves. Harriet Tubman was a very important person in American history.
