Bats – Transcript
Bats are flying mammals. This makes them special. While other mammals, like flying squirrels, can glide for a while, only bats are able to fly over longer distances. There are over 1000 different kinds of bats, and all of them are nocturnal. This means they are active at night.
Most bats are small and live on a diet of insects. But there are types of bats that eat fruit, fish, and even blood! Bats that eat blood are called “vampire bats“. Their teeth are very sharp, but they do not usually hurt or kill the animals they feed on. In fact, most animals never know they’ve been bitten.
Bats like to live in dark places where they won’t be bothered by the sun. They often make their homes in caves, old buildings, or special wooden bat houses. Bats can live for up to 20 years. Sometimes they live alone and sometimes in groups of hundreds or thousands.
Bats cannot see well, but they have a special skill called “echolocation” that helps them get around. The bats make small noises as they fly. Sound waves caused by these noises bounce off of nearby objects. This helps bats to sense their surroundings and avoid bumping into things.
