Easter Bunny (Upper-Intermediate – C1)

Easter Bunny - Transcript

The Easter Bunny (also called the Easter Rabbit or Easter Hare) is a folkloric character and symbol of Easter. The character is usually depicted as a rabbit with human characteristics. Most images of the Easter Bunny show a rabbit walking upright, dressed in clothes and carrying a basket full of eggs. Originating among German Lutherans, the “Easter Hare” originally played the role of a judge, evaluating whether children were good or disobedient at the start of the Easter season. This tradition is very similar to the “naughty or nice” list made by Santa Claus.
As part of the legend, the creature carries colored eggs, candy, and sometimes toys to the homes of children. As such, the Easter Bunny again shows similarities to Santa and Christmas by bringing gifts to children on the night before a holiday. Although the custom is quite old, many families in Europe and North America continue the tradition by giving colored eggs as well as chocolates (usually in the shape of rabbits or eggs) to children at Easter.
